In the past I have higlighted areas of 'activity' which look as if there is an ongoing mini-war between factions. Where one faction comes in and ransacks the underground city of another faction, causing lots of disturbance in the process. This may be the same thing as I cannot imagine that the rover did all this digging. It is like someone has gone through the area with their hands and unearthed as many rocks and stones from beneath the surface as they can.
Of course, it could be just an up-welling of gasses (or liquid) like a methane blow-out which pushed everything to the surface. Now... thats an idea and might account for the large amount of methane they mysteriously found in the atmosphere. We have the same thing on Earth under the ocean and tundra but in Russia, it causes huge sink holes because the ground is hard not soft like here.
There are a few 'holes' in the ground also which suggest something escaping - maybe this is where the snake-martians have escaped before/after the outgassing event occurred?
