Chuck...  Crying in caps over a construct  built by 'HUMANS' to bridge the gap of the events beyond our understanding reveals some of the worst characteristics of the human ego. What you call reward and punishment by a deity is a rather vein attempt by man to avoid the more important point that we are a tiny fragment of a bigger more important Universe. Religion is an easy escape route, as we project our fears , wonder and chiefly blame on an abstract figure of order and power. That artificially generated link has been used for eons as a means of control. We call this today, RELIGION! Ignorance breads fear. fear breads ignorance!
At some point we are going to all have to accept that punishment and reward are simply causes and affects of circumstances in situations generated within a world we perceive. It makes things no less painful but ever more real!

I would like to leave you with a quote and a suggestion to read a book "The 12th Planet" by : Zecharia Sitchin

I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation and is but a reflection of human frailty.
Albert Einstein

I believe you are on the correct path with GOD. I encourage you to read a book entitled "Cosmic Voyage" By: Courtney Brown  In my opinon one of the most important books written that sheds light on What GOD is.

Aloha,

Chuck

Is "God" the universe? I have seen a lot of Atheists who have had things such as heart failures, die and have a doctor revive them. A lot, if not most of these people claim that they experienced hell and they all describe hell as being the same thing but religious people (of any religion) who die never experience anything like this. A lot of people including myself have had memories of what seems to be past lives. I have had memories of what seems to be past lives and I have had these memories even when I was a toddler, but the disturbing thing is, is that later in my life I was at these places I had memories of, the only difference is that these places looked a bit older than in my memories.

My theory is that the Universe is "God" and the Universe has always existed. I think people who believe in a higher power and maintain good moral standards will be reborn when they die and people who do not believe in a higher power, do not care about others and don't have any moral standards will be sent to a "lower" place in the Universe or what some refer to as "Hell".

What is your opinion on this?

Hey Zman!. So, you simply ask, "what is your opinion on this"? And I will simply answer that by saying, "I have no opinion on that". :)

But, I do "believe" everything that "The Bible" (God's Word for all) says, including it saying in Hebrews 11 vs 3 : By faith we understand that the universe has been created by a word from God so that the visible came into existence from the invisible. (Comon English Bible). Young's literal translation says it this way: by faith we understand the ages to have been prepared by a saying of God, in regard to the things seen not having come out of things appearing;

That just says that God spoke it all into existance, so, on the basis of what God says, no, the universe is not God.

Actually, God spoke everything into existance, except Man, and he made man with his own hands, according to the book of Genesis, in The Bible.

Yes, the NDE accounts are very interesting, and many are very similar in some respects.

One thing for sure, over the ages, man has made up all kinds of stuff about what he does or doesn't believe. So, even today, you may get some pretty interesting "opinions" on your question!
