Papa suggests that 'rocks' with square holes in them may not be rocks at all but the effects of westhering on machinery of some kind with square openings for the machinery to fit together. However, I dont see why the square holes would remain square if the outside has weathered. Most hard edges get softened over time - at least on Earth they do but maybe the weathering is different on Mars..
this gave to me an idea : could be possible that sometimes some looking-like stones showing artificial looking-like elements are metallic debris, part of ancient machineries that after centuries of exposure to erosion have undergone a process of deformation and petrification.
yes, very plausible and even in less than centuries.
i found a thing that gave me an idea about square holes in rocks, and generally rocks showing strange and geometrical/artificial looking like shapes.
yesterday doing some gardening in my house i found a bullet of WWII, i live only few kilometers from the "gotic line" in italy. this bullet has been fired but jammed, the ignition charge didnt work, then it has been expelled manually, leaving a short but clear cut on its surface. it is slightly deformed, probably for the attempt to clear the jam, and during the years became equal in colour and consistency to a little nearly cilindric stone. i could identify this object as something of artificial only for the bizarre shape and looking closer, for the lines separating the ignition charge from the bullet.

I wonder whether they started to make a hole and then the rock was too hard or soft or not suitable perhaps. The ones I have seen with something inside them are always more square like the one on the right rather than long and thin like the one on the left. The not-square ones possibly have some other use?
There have been some examples before, but this one is obvious. I wonder what else in the picture we are not supposed to notice?
What could create this rectangular hole and what could the lighter grey thing be in the hole to the left? Maybe it is just a trick of the light or shadow perhaps? Hmm... I wonder? original Sol 2527
