I have used the PDS material and found it lacking in quality that's why I prefer to use hi-res jpeg's if available, although it has to be said that the PDS reference material may be useful for making comparisons.
The images posted above are the jpeg's but contain no compression artifacts as they have been removed. What can be observed is the RAW content.
The program used to process and improve the images is Paintshop Pro v 6.0. When using this application to remove artifacts first load the original image, select 'gaussian blur' then use 'sharpen more' followed by 'sharpen'. This basic amount of filtering is sufficient to view the majority of jpeg's without any change to the image content.
The whole of the Meridiani Planum is an interesting region. I feel at one time the whole area was covered with an unknown depth of water and the top layer of the sedimentary rock layers is very close to the surface. The top layer is now covered by a shallow depth of fine sand. Also in the area, impact damage from a meteorite is evident which separated in the form of large fragments coming to rest at different locations. Whether a depth of water was covering the area at the time of impact is unknown. More on this and evidence of sedimentary layering will be shown in another thread.
It has been found that the tiny 'sand people' appear to build groups of structures in their own facial likeness. This is why many anthropolgical shapes can be seen in the images shown above. Many of the faces seen display human-like form. This observation raises serious questions for astrobiologists as it may be an answer to the discovery by NASA of vast quantities of methane in the martian atmosphere. There are also animal shapes to be seen. Many of these zoological shapes appear mainly as the faces of dogs but other animal shapes have been observed. This type of construction has also been found in other parts of the planet.

Unfortunately the PDS does not have the latest images (although you would think that the "raw" (haha) images come first, and the lower resolution images come from those), so we cannot examine them in fine detail yet.
It may be better to try to find examples of this kind of thing using the same images that scientists use to examine their research of craters etc.(ie: the ones from the PDS) since then, no-one can tell you they are just compression artifacts.
I have to say though, that the rover PDS img files I have seen are only about 1Mb so cannot contain much in the way of detail either. I am still looking for a program I can call from my program to extract these .img files. Then we can all examine them without special software like photoshop plugins etc.
Opportunity is on a journey to another crater in the Meridiani Planum region.
The terrain appears to be a vast desert - or is it?
This thread attempts to examine and analyze what is really on the surface.

The image shows that what appears to slabs of rock in the desert are not rocks at all.
In another thread I made mention that it has been found that the tiny ones who live on Mars construct their buildings, or groups of buildings, in their own likeness. Close examination of the above shows this to be the case.
Please examine the images carefully and note there even appears to be statues of recognizable form in the different communities.
