This is definately a carving per the "arch" at the top of the notch and the figure in the recess.  The reasoning for such a carving eludes me but I am only the observer.

Yes, I do. Link Unfortunately it is to a panorama and I cannot find where the individual pictures are that make it up. It is around Sol 80 I think and probably Navcam. I have been through Pancam and there are some, but not the particular one I am looking for, for my smoking kippers thread! The panorama is 9Mb so quite large.

Maybe our resident expert on "rock weathering" (SP !) could chip in to have a go and tell me what this might be? It does not appear to be a crack and it does not appear to be a natural formation.

There may even be some kind of pattern on the part of the rock facing to the right also.
