Chandre: I cannot help thinking that people will not find it here - particularly as it relates to the mars rover photographs only and is not general at all. Anyway, it does not matter. I did it for myself to use and the thread is here for anyone else who needs it.
The program should be OK now for any of the examples below, not just for straight .jpg urls.
AliensRPeople2: If you look at some of the URLs (the address of the web page), they have a long name for the photograph.
examples are http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p/001/2P126471535EDN0000P2303L6M1.HTML http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p/001/2P126471510EDN0000P2303L5M1-BR.JPG http://areo.info/mer/spirit/1907/tn/2P295667757EDNB1DNP2281L5M1_L4L5L5L5L6.jpg.html
The part that starts 2P.... or 1P... tells us information about the photograph. Information like shown in the example in the post above.
This tells NASA when it was produced and how and where etc. This is encoded into the name. The program decodes this information and spits it out in human readable format as shown. All you have to do is paste the URL the web address into the box and it should decode it for you.
sorry gmantoo, you lost me after the first sentence!!! I'm NO computer genius not even close... I'm content to know how to turn on my puter and then post here and there... but... I applaud you on your efforts and admire your intelligence!!! Kudos...
Is there a site that decodes the file name? I am writing a program to do that if anyone is interested. It would tell us the site etc. This is what I have so far. Probably have it for you guys to test tomorrow sometime. I have a bug in the date part to sort out.

It was taken with the PANCAM, through the Left camera, using a 535nm (20nm bandpass) (green) filter on the Mars Rover Spirit.
It is a Downsampled EDR picture which is raw, is NOT liniarised, and is NOT thumbnail sized
The picture was taken at site number B1 on drive number DN, and the command sequence number P2281 to take the picture was instructed by PMA & Remote Sensing instr. (Pancam, Navcam, Hazcam, MI, Mini-TES) and belongs to the group 2000 through 2899 - Pancam sequences ---------------------------------------------------
