Trust me, they are the same rock at the same site. Confirmed by me after examining the Traverse map to see why the Sols were so far apart...

You can see the broken off bit in the different angle on the original Balancing Stone thread and in the images repeated in this thread.

Software Pyrate, I understand what you are saying but there are two many anomalies on the rock itself to account for normal waethering and the same pattern does not apply to the rocks around it. Wind cannot choose which stones to erode in an area. It may be a different type of rock that is softer but then look at the strange 'angle' rock near it which had the same texture and a formation that cannot possibly be caused by wind erosion ....

I didn't say wind erosion IS the cause....

I said is it possible it could be the cause....

Why are you so sure that wind erosion( and I'm not saying that is the case here but) is not going on in mars.....?

haha - you and your weathering "erosion" !! There are plenty of places on Mars that would attract weathering of rocks if such weathering existed. Look at the desert pictures you posted in another thread, most of the exposed areas have strange weathered look, but on Mars on occasionally do we find these 'weathered' rocks. You figure it out for yourself.

Just throwing this out there....and I have read both threads regarding the balancing stones.

But, couldn't it just be simple erosion over time that has swept the sand away leaving only the rock behind on top of another rock? Happens all the time here on earth.

There are lots of images for site AZ if I have decoded this picture correctly. However, some seem to be missing and give 404 error but there are others for other sols at the same site which appear to be OK. Maybe we can find more views of these from different angles.

Thanks, Chandre.

There were two pairs of this image available - and I used the larger one - which I think is the same one you have posted above.

Thanks Marsrocks biggrin

I have been staring at this for days now and I see something mechanical in the round section. Am I alone in that ?

Marsrocks, how did you get that image anomaly so clear ? Are you using another image, if so please can you post the number so I can have a look at it.

This is more startling than the 'meteorite' anomalies as its clearly of intelligent design.....confuse

Wow. Marsrocks that technique really highlights the 3D aspect of the 'key-hole'. We had speculated that it may be a device for emitting water or spray or even smoke and that looks like it may well be a possibility as it looks mechanical ? Thanks ! Could you post each frame by itself so we could have a look at that more closely?

Hi,, The “stone” looks to me as opening to something.
The pipe Xenon talks about is very much like camera lens.

There's another similarity here to something I've posted before which  suspected may be a piece of jewellry such as an armband or a vase or drinking vessel

Another thing I find interesting about this image is the tube like stone sticking out of the slab, at first I thought lizard type creature, but as I looked closer I could see the tube is similar to the slab it is lifting, but there is no sediment mound around it, so it must be a recent feature....

2P171996132EFFAALCP2427L7M1.jpg

It is strange seeing these out of place block stones sitting on top of these white base stones, I could understand them being laid down by moving ice (such as glaciers), but I don't buy the theory of volcanic explosion debris.

great pics chandre! i have not seen them before.

yes, the terrain is similar as is the "key hole" outline on each. how far away are they from each other?

plus both are in a most odd position to be plain ol' rocks!

to me they both remind me of cast iron, like automobile engine material.

especially the way it looks to be broken.

i will look up the balancing rock. thanks!

Nice image gbull and I have not seen it before. If you read the 'Balancing Stone' thread you will see that the stone there is also 'standing' in an upright position and has a similar what  I will call 'circle cross' design on the side as this one. In fact the similarities of terrain are VERY interesting. I also agree that it appears that the section on the left may have broken off the larger piece.

Images from the other site (Balancing Stone Thread) Image 2P167556924EFFA9HEP2280L7M1

See the similar form on the standing stone from the other site

A similar stone to your one in the same area including the 'sharp' bit. This stone is still whole. Image 2P167293127EFFA9GEP2414R1M1

there is a circle on the near side of the "box" and i almost think the smaller thing broke off
from the box.

i'll make some circles and crops.

Anyhow image you posted is from Spirit sol 514
Bigger anomaly seems to be a stone(?) and I dont know what to make of the other one to the left? It needs to be examined in stereo but I cannot make any right now.

i'm sure some of you have seen this before.

i'm not sure what to make of this myself.

there are 2 anomalies in here. the big one and a small one to the left.

how it got to stand up and just it's look, makes me wonder if it's been made.

not to mention what the heck is it doing there! lol.

anyone with more info on this?
