Nice find...it could be plant matter but also reminds me of an ancient arthropod like a land version of a sea scorpion.

This object is biological in nature. It appears to be a multilegged creature that lives under the soil. It is reminicent of a scorpion. Unfortunately the Spirit rover has run it over, separating its tail and probably ending its life.
Only black and white level enhancements were used for clarification and paint for id on the third photo.
