Or could be a communications aerial or a look-out post as well as a weapon, but it is definitely something like that there on a tower/rock pillar.

And what are the things behind it at 2-3 o'clock which are a lighter grey colour? They look similar to each other.

Q, thats an interesting post.

I found something a while ago in image M2202032 that may support it. It appeared to be 'tubes' that could be see through holes below ground level.

SEMWU2474OD (if this does not work, go to the ESA Multimendia Gallery, Images, then search for 'Marineris' without the quotes and it should be item number 74. When I checked this, it kept coming up with an error - "Not found (error to origin)" , so not sure whether they will have fixed it yet...))

The image here has some really interesting features which look like body tissues, muscles, tendons etc and I am wondering whether these same processes go to make up the support system for the 'glass tubes' we see around in other images?  (I may have increased the brightness on this)

3-d images  ( http://www.esa.int/esa-mmg/mmg.pl?b=b&keyword=Marineris&single=y&start=74 )

I have studied eyes and some of these structures look exactly like the fibres in the iris of the eye. Some of the shapes where the fibres part and make an oval deep hole in the centre are exactly the same too.

The red circled area shows a series of 2 or 3 rectangular outline structures with something inside (you decide what) and the yellow circled area shows what looks like a pipeline. It appears to be broken at this zoom size, but this is due to low-level dark smudging over all of that area and is not actually broken at all. There are many amny different structuires all over this image and I encourage you all to look at it closely as a lot can be seen by just altering the brightness.
