Its been an interesting month in South Africa, aliens landed...not in District 9 but in vast numbers with very noisy mouth attachments and an insatiable appetite for alcohol and local delicacies.
I watched the Opening World Cup ceremony with great pride, its showcased the absolute best of what Africa is about, not high tech, not fireworks and sparkling lights...but rather what is possible when many people work together as one. It was a proudly South African moment. Unfortunately, the Closing Ceremony was not as pleasing except for the exquisite elephants around the waterhole skit and Madibas short appearance.
A land that has had its spirit threatened by racial tension over the past year, was once again united under its very colourful flag. The 'Rainbow people' shone, they showed their best side and made the visitors very welcome (well most of them, sorry about the 700 dissapointed fans when our VVIPS would not move their planes in Durban, we the public are mortified that happened). Even the lion-hearted performance of our sadly inadequate team did not dampen our spirits, we enjoyed and appreciated their effort and turned to our second choices (in my case Spain, VIVA ESPANJA !!!) without guilt or regret. We wore their colours, sang their songs and blew their horns (so to speak ;-0)
It was an honour and pleasure to host the world, come back soon y'all
