People talks about images from NASA as to they were stored in poly-layer form like music before it is written on the CD that is in some ways correct, but when picture is finished, it is only one layer of data, as on a CD that means some processing can't bring us a new view to it.

Iceman, The thing to remember when studying an image 'is that our eyes are conditioned to look for colours and shade, our brains are also programmed to perceive in 3D (quite an amazing piece of Bio hardware if you ask me), using software to enhance a digital image can break that conditioning allowing our brain to interpret the data differently (in some cases creating something that does not even exist).

The problem for us if we use digital software, is that most of the images we have to work with contain no hidden data or doctoring, some of the older images we research are prints from celluloid film, and most of what we see from the rovers and other probes raw images are just that "a raw image", so enhancing an image using software will not always show us anything new, except highlight structures and artefacts etc that we can already see and enhance with our PC.

Chandre is correct most PC users (and that includes me) are happy to use the basic software to enhance contrast, hue, etc to a comfortable degree, but I do think there are times when digital software can be used as a tool to enhance evidence as in the case of gmantos and marsrockd programmes (and in very rare cases show us digital added artefacts).

Iceman, I use exactly the same tools because that is what the majority of people in the world that work on PC's have access to. I have never felt limited by them and I am happy with how I can work them and I know that other people can replicate what I have done using the same tools.

Its nice to have addded bits like gmantoos new programme to add some colour as it gives the images more depth and we can explain how we did it (well at least gmantoo and marsrocks can biggrin).

I have the feeling that people here do not fellow me, I think it is because they use pore tools, I use,in most all cases: Windows and Fax viewer fore examine my picture and Microsoft Office Picture Manager for sharpening and color management. That are the most reliable tools because they lean on they most nearest function. And of course you nead hight quality monitor.
