I do not think the animated photograph shows movement because at this magnification, there could be JPG compression differences in the multiple photos. Where there is a light pixel next to a dark pixel, the compression algorithm may or may not make the following pixel a light or dark colour. This makes it look as if the object is moving. We need to see a much higher magnification original or the object needs to be waving much harder and faster to us.

A lot of these things seem to have very 'human' technology such as nuts and bolts, cog wheels, pipes, reinforcing rods, etc.

This is what I don't understand - any civilisation that evolved indepenently of Earth would have developed things in a different way. They would not have square nuts, concrete re-inforcing rods, huge chimneys, huge nozzles for shooting liquids and things like this.

I cannot imagine what they would have, but it is unlikely to be the same as ours unless there is a common technological ancestry. I hope that some scientist somewhere does a study into the common ancestry and pulls together the pieces of evidence.

Why is it there in the middle of this area on its own? We can see it is not a meteorite, so it must have fallen there as a result of some other event - like something blowing up (but then it would not have been placed deliberately on a pedestal). So it must have been placed there on purpose, but it does not appear to have any function (now) and anything that heated it would have knocked it off its pedestal and they would be separate.

So, what are we saying this Block Island is then? A being-made machine which has been melted by some extremely high heat source before it was placed on this pedestal by someone to do something?

Hey, I'm not asking for anyone to eat humble pie.  I'd also like to know if it is common for meterorites to have forms within them like we have shown in this one.

Could this be some other metal object that fell from Mars orbit, like an ancient satellite?  Those little gear looking baubles exposed just inside the melted part make me wonder about other possibilities.

Meanwhile, questions about the lack of a crater around this "meterorite" have been answered by geology types thusly: this is a "deflation zone" - meaning the rocks in this area that we see have been unburied over the eons by the removal of soil by wind and water.  So, in other words, this "meteorite" made a crater here 3 billion years ago - was buried in the crater; then over the next 3 b years, was unburied. - so that it looks in pristine condition today on top of a flat surface rather than on the bottom of a crater.  The low number of craters in this area prove the surface is fresh and backs up this theory. Others talk about the possibility that its shape at one time may have allowed it to fly to this spot and land like a space shuttle rather than with a whump - thus avoiding the creation of a crater.

This Lump of iron has a dubious explanation and landing..

Quoted
The strange metallic object, which poses new puzzles about the planet's long history, is so massive it would have smashed itself to smithereens if it had fallen onto the planet recently because the atmosphere on Mars has long been far too thin to slow any meteorite's descent, scientists say.

Instead, reason planetary researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Mars must have had a much thicker atmosphere long ago that slowed down the meteorite as it sped toward the surface from far distant space.

And when was that?

From what Opportunity's controllers now deduce about Martian history, it must have been at least 3 billion years ago, said Matthew Golombek, a planetary geologist at the laboratory.

WOW...This rocks in remarkably good condition being exposed to the corrosive 3 billion years of mars atmospheric history.. (common guys pull the other one lolol)

Maybe These scientists would like to talk about whats crawling around, leaving glyphs and Oh, maybe, just maybe bringing in this rock as a party piece

Nasa have tampered this rock beyon recognition and not been forthright about whats going on so Im afraid a pinch of salt will be needed before I eat any humble piesmile

Heres what I ve found and noticed the reason why the call it island.

ghhfh.jpg

Theres alot more about this tampered out rock/iron nugget.. Notice the heavy tampering all over it. Theres also a curved plynth like structure with faint glyphs..

Cheers JPL

NASA calls this the "Block Island" meteorite, and it has been heavily discussed on the internet for various reasons.

They've got some images up:

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mer/images/mer20090806a.html

http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mer/images/mer-20090810b.html

"The meteorite is densely metallic, the scientist said - about 93 percent iron and 7 percent nickel - and must weigh somewhere between 880 and 1,900 pounds."

marsrocks - thanks for the animation smile It really does appear to be moving. I also found another area that seems to be moving...

As for your anomaly..brilliantly spotted and its a beauty, I cannot find it on the one above confuse so maybe it appeared later ?

Hi guys , there is an interesting debate about the pristine rock that fell to earth at thousands of miles per hour with no crater slight wear from thin Martian atmosphere. Jpl left a wonderful clue ( very deliberate) you need an in cropped version an you, see something. I'm out and about ( iPhone) so can't paste images quickly. Just look carefully.

This isn't a meteorite,, :)

I think it might be some kind of bizarre mating ritual of the lesser-spotted martian snake people. They rear-up like cobras and then entwine their necks. I have seen this a lot on earth.....

Actually, no idea what it could be. It does not appear to be very big - maybe 4-6 inches do you think?

This is obviously what the scientists at NASA are photographing with this shot as it is right in the front of the picture.
