Yes, that came to me mind when I was looking at this photo.
There are indications of that a water flow along the cliffs, from time to time 
which has eroded the rocks.

Yes, I agree and there are also some areas with much finer soil with small grains of 'sand' as if it is a river bed. I really dont thinkthat anyone can say there evidence is not overwhelming in favour ow some kind of liquid, some kind of civilisation, and some kind of past wars which have taken place there.

No-one seemed to like my wet soil thread I posted some time ago. I will try and find it and link this to it and the other one about water too.

water effect

When rain falls on rock wall, the water flows to Earth's nearest the wall and rinse off dust and sand, leaving a coarse layer of material.
This effect can be seen in the accompanying photo.
